Today's walk, from Colunga to Villavisioca, allows me one last opportunity to consider my options for the rest of my camino. 3.7 kms outside of Villavisioca, the road splits, and some people will continue on the Norte route, while the majority of people will shift to the left and take the more mountainous route, known as the Camino Primitivo. The first recorded trek, by Asturian King Alfonso II, in the 9th century, occurred along the Primitivo, and it is popular to combine with the Norte.

Leaving Colunga...

ree

Bags of drying walnuts drape this house...

ree

Sheeple..

ree

So many beautiful houses in Spain, and easily 70% of them are walled with security system signs... for warm, friendly people, they sure do put up a lot of barriers!

Decision made!

ree

Lots of small hills today...

ree

These old churches dot the countryside everywhere...

ree

These Asturian storage sheds are everywhere and were used to store the harvest away from pests and water .

ree

As we head closer to Villavisioca, the apple capital of Spain, trees are laid heavy with fruit...

ree

Cactus pears and oranges next to each other...

ree

Another tree arch..

ree

A shed for shoeing horses...

ree

These paths usually mean a drop in temperature and some much needed shade... This was the first time I realized that the trees were starting to turn colors..

ree

An interesting old window in an abandoned house...

ree

This pilgrim stop had a very serene garden, and I stayed here longer than I probably should have..

ree

Various vegetables growing on the side of the road...

ree

Amazing how these abandoned houses just get swallowed back up by the earth... dust to dust...

ree

The road to Villavisioca turns back towards the ocean briefly...

ree

The long and winding road .

ree

I spot this across a field around 430pm and think I could go for a cider or champagne!

ree

Another church...

ree

It's been hot like this for weeks...

ree

Arrival in Villavisioca...

ree

Love these old streets...

ree

Some local products for sale...

ree

I think there may be more churches than cows in Spain...

After showering and doing some laundry, we make our way to the grocery store and return to the albergue to prepare a very unpilgrim dinner...

ree

As it is our last night together, I go a little over the top, but am able to prepare 3 dishes in just over an hour...

ree

We start with a red snapper, squid and prawn ceviche, served with guacamole...

ree

Next is a pinwheel roasted ratatouille that looked great in the pan but fell apart when I served it..

ree

Finished with a lamb tagine that had neither quite the right spices nor quite the right dried fruit and nuts, but overall not a bad effect..

By the time we finished cleaning up, it was 1115pm when I crawled into bed...

Distance travelled today- 24 kms

TOTAL DISTANCE TRAVELLED DO FAR- 515KMS

This blog entry is dedicated to Donika McFarlane... you know why... ; )

5 hunnie!!! Halfway there but you can stop anytime and just enjoy the days and still have accomplished a very difficult endeavor.

I'd probably have been arrested more than a couple of times for drunk and disorderly by now.

Geez Louise, walking 22 kms and then rustling up a big dinner! You're making me hungry now, lol.

I think I'd consider the oceanside path also, but let's be honest: Uber.

Ciao!

So which route did you take? 35C in October , wow, it was 9C in FF today. So you must be past the half way mark now That means it’s all downhill from there.
